The solar system formed 4.6 billion years ago from the gravitational collapse of a giant interstellar molecular cloud. It consists of eight planets which have almost circular orbits that lie within a nearly flat disc called the ecliptic. The largest body in the solar system is the Sun. The four inner planets, Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars, are smaller and are terrestial - meaning they are mainly composed of rock and metal. The next two Jupiter and Saturn are much later and are gas giants, being mainly composed of hydrogem and helium. The last two, Uranus and Neptune, are ice giants, being mainly composed of substances with relatively high melting points such as water, ammonia and methane.
